U.S. Lines Stack Train
Seaboard System GP38-2’s 6254 and 4061 were with B23-7 5113 on an eastbound United States Lines stack train on the SBD in New Orleans. This train was on its way from the Union Pacific (MP) AVONDALE YARD to the SBD GENTILLY YARD, and was about to cross the main line of the Norfolk Southern (originally the New Orleans & Northeastern) at N.E. TOWER. These U.S. Lines trains ran once a week and originated on the Union Pacific (MP) in Houston as symbol XHOAV. At GENTILLY it became SBD train 202 and continued on to Savannah, Georgia. SBD - and later CSX - power usually ran all the way from Savannah to Houston and then back to New Orleans where the locomotives would be replaced by freshly-serviced units. SBD was renamed CSX Transportation on 1 July 1986 and the train was discontinued several months later, after U.S. Lines filed for bankruptcy on 24 November 1986.
