Description:
Amtrak train No. 1, the westbound Sunset Limited, has just arrived in New Orleans off the CSX and is seen shoving towards N.O.U.P.T. P40-8's 809 and 821 are in charge of a 9-car consist: 1187, 39007, 32017, 32037, 38047, 33002, 34069, 39952, and 31029. During the train's layover in Track Five the power will be replaced with P32-8 504 and F40PH 233. On the way out of town five American Orient Express car will be picked up on the rear of the train from Track Three.

Description:
Brand new Amtrak P40DC 819 is seen in the middle of its brief 20-day career leading train No. 58, the northbound City of New Orleans, out of the Crescent City. Having made its first revenue out of Chicago on train No. 59 on September 3, 1993, this locomotive would be destroyed leading train No. 2 over the Big Bayou Canot bridge near Mobile, Alabama on September 22, 1993. Three Amtrak engineers would be fatally injured in this locomotive that night: Michael Vinet, Ernie Russ, and Billy Rex Hall. But on this day Amtrak 819 was the newest locomotive on the system leading a typical heritage consist of eight cars: 1174, 4724, 4002, 4718, 9408, 4016, 28021, and 2464 "Silver Isle". A rare site occurred on this day: Amtrak train No. 58, the Northbound City of New Orleans, detours out of New Orleans over the Norfolk Southern. This train normally operates over the Illinois Central between New Orleans and Chicago; however, due to an Illinois Central derailment at Prescott Road in Jackson, MS this train will operate over the NS to Hattiesburg, MS and then into Jackson, MS on the IC Beaumont District. Here we see the train accelerating on the NS New Orleans Terminal as it approaches the Marconi Drive overpass and City Park. P40-8 822, P32-8 509, 1254, 39906, 31043, 34084, 399?4, 34057, 34061, 33008, 38043, 32056, 32047, 32033, and PV "Osage River" (800610). The consist was a bit longer than normal to handle increased ridership for Mardi Gras. While on the NS this train operated as NS symbol O-22. Southbound train No. 59 also detoured via this route on this day as NS symbol O-23.
